Ballybofey is looking forward to a Big Birthday party celebrating it’s 400th anniversary later this month. In 1619 a charter was granted for a market to be established on the banks of the River Finn. While there certainly were people already living along the River’s banks, this is the first record of a formal gathering here.
In celebration of this event BASICC has partnered with the Ballybofey, Stranorlar & District Historical Society to plan for a community event to mark the occasion from 27th to 29th September, and they are looking for your ideas!
Leah Fairman from BASICC says ‘We are really looking forward to our Big Birthday Bash Weekend. The plans look exciting already with many groups and community organisations getting involved. We want to celebrate our rich traditions of music and culture. And as the original charter for was a market, we’re looking at ways to celebrate and remember the ‘Fair Days’ in the towns. ‘
So far the plans include: Time Capsules; Re-enactment of a Hiring Fair; a children’s tractor run; craft stalls; old-time games; guided historical walks; petting zoo; art and photographic exhibitions; adult tractor run; an interpretive dance group; Irish Coffee Competition in Jackson’s Hotel and much, much more.
The ideas is to celebrate with a weekend full of independent events run by lots of groups around the towns. BASICC is working with schools and community groups to come up with ideas and put together a programme. As well as your ideas BASICC would like to hear from anyone who may have old photos or artefacts relating to Ballybofey that could be put on display for the weekend.
Do you have any memories or stories about events or people that should be celebrated? What would you like to see happen as part of the weekend?
